Australia to Acquire Used Nuclear Submarines in Updated AUKUS Deal
Under the original 2021 agreement, Australia was expected to obtain at least two used submarines and one newly built Virginia-class vessel, as previously outlined in official reporting.
However, Marles said the updated plan now involves the purchase of only second-hand Virginia-class submarines from the United States, marking a shift in procurement strategy.
A joint statement from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia said the adjustment was intended to streamline the program by “simplifying supply-chain management, operational and maintenance requirements, and maximising cost efficiencies.”
The AUKUS partnership between the three countries is designed to strengthen long-term defense cooperation and enhance undersea warfare capabilities.
Funding commitments for the program include £4 billion ($5.3 billion) from the UK, $17.5 billion from the US, and more than 30 billion Australian dollars ($20.7 billion) from Australia, as stated by reports.
