Ex-US Intelligence Officer Charged in Alleged $40M Gold Theft Case
The individual, identified as David Rush, previously held a management position and was charged in the Eastern District of Virginia with criminal theft of public funds. His attorney has not issued a public response.
According to an FBI affidavit cited in the case, Rush repeatedly requested significant amounts of money between November and March, including foreign currency and large quantities of gold bars, claiming the funds were required for official work-related expenses.
Investigators later determined that only a portion of the requested funds remained in a storage facility near his office. Authorities subsequently conducted a search of his residence on May 18, where they allegedly discovered approximately 300 gold bars valued at more than $40 million, along with around $2 million in cash and dozens of luxury watches.
Court filings allege that he diverted part of the funds intended for official use and transferred them to his home for personal benefit.
Although the documents do not explicitly name the agency involved, individuals familiar with his employment history stated that he worked for the CIA. Officials further indicated that most of the recovered assets, including both cash and gold, were retrieved during the investigation.
In a joint statement, the CIA and FBI said the case originated from an internal review. “After a CIA internal investigation identified potential violations of the law, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the information to the FBI for a law enforcement investigation,” the statement said.
Authorities have not provided additional details on possible sentencing or further charges as the case proceeds through the court system.
