USS Gettysburg (CG 64) Sailors Conclude Namesake Visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
“It was an honor for our sailors to help maintain such a solemn and important area of our nation’s history, honoring those brave warriors who came before us. These visits not only strengthen our bond with Gettysburg but also give us a renewed sense of pride in our ship and her mission” said Capt. Keith Turner, commanding officer of USS Gettysburg (CG 64).
Throughout the visit, the crew participated in a variety of community and ceremonial events, including working alongside the National Park Service to help restore and preserve historic Civil War headstones within the Gettysburg National Cemetery, conducting a motivational run alongside National Park staff, and attending civic dinners hosted by Gettysburg Mayor Alison Lintal and AMVETS Post 172 in Fairfield. These engagements provided an opportunity for Sailors to share their stories of service while building lasting relationships with the community.
USS Gettysburg (CG 64) is the second ship to bear the name of Gettysburg, continuing a proud naval tradition of honoring the community and its contributions to our nation's defense while commemorating the historical significance of the Battle of Gettysburg.
USS Gettysburg (CG 64) is a guided-missile cruiser, a multi-role warship designed primarily to provide comprehensive, integrated air defense for carrier strike groups while possessing formidable offensive capabilities in surface and sub-surface warfare. Armed with the Aegis Combat System, cruisers serve as essential command-and-control hubs for naval operations, ensuring maritime superiority and defending American interests globally. Following their visit, USS Gettysburg has resumed normal operations. Commissioned in 1991, USS Gettysburg is homeported in Norfolk, Virginia.
COMNAVSURFLANT mans, trains and equips assigned surface forces and shore activities, ensuring a capable force for conducting prompt and sustained operations in support of United States national interests. The SURFLANT force is composed of 77 ships and 31 shore commands.
