Forging Readiness for LSCO: 597th Decorates Soldiers, Civilians for Strategic TTX Success
FORT EUSTIS, Va. —For the 597th Transportation Brigade, ARTRANS ("Rapid Support"), the decisive battleground for modern military operations begins long before equipment reaches an ocean vessel—it begins at the planning table. Headquartered at Fort Eustis under the U.S. Army Transportation Command (ARTRANS), the brigade executes an unyielding strategic mission: to project the force in support of large-scale combat operations (LSCO) across the globe and sustain the global warfighter.
To validate and sharpen that capability, the brigade's combined team of Soldiers and Department of the Army civilians conducted an intensive, multi-day End-to-End Deployment Tabletop Exercise (TTX) this past summer in the Chapel Annex at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Recently, Brigade Commander Col. Edward K. Woo recognized the key military and civilian leaders who spearheaded the exercise's planning and execution during a ceremony at brigade headquarters, presenting awards for their pivotal roles in pressure-testing the nation's strategic surface distribution architecture.
"The team hit it out of the park," Woo stated. "The positive energy for doctrine and what we do on a daily basis is deeply inspiring. This holistic view of logistics will help us develop ironclad TTPs [tactics, techniques, and procedures] which will withstand the fury of combat. We are stronger together as an enterprise, and what we achieved here is the hallmark of professionalism."
The strategic exercise served as a critical platform to evaluate systems, commercial seaport integrations, and inland distribution networks necessary to project combat power at tempo. During the awards presentation, Col. Woo decorated four key planners and developers whose dedication ensured the event's strategic success:
· Capt. Whitney Hodge, Operations Officer (S-3), was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for serving as the primary coordinator and lead architect of the TTX. Hodge led the multi-month planning effort, designing complex logistics scenarios that challenged participants to synchronize military movements with commercial carrier capacities and port authority operations. · Sgt. Andrea Altamirano, Operations NCO (S-3), was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for her exceptional service as the lead developer for the exercise. Altamirano directed the creation of the Master Scenario Events List (MSEL), built custom injects, and constructed the comprehensive terrain-board layouts and digital tracking data that allowed operators to simulate end-to-end movement velocity. · Mr. Brian Ridgway, Training Specialist in the Operations Section (S-3), was presented the Department of the Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal for his outstanding technical contributions. Ridgway designed scenario training modules, developed operational curricula, and synchronized inter-battalion movement timelines across the planning horizon. · Mr. Jesse Jantz, Security Specialist in the Security Section (S-2), was presented the Department of the Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal for his integral work in operational security and mission assurance. Jantz synchronized threat intelligence, simulated contested logistics scenarios, and embedded critical security protocols to safeguard strategic power projection platforms and commercial rail and port nodes.
Through rigorous, scenario-driven events like the End-to-End Deployment TTX, the 597th Transportation Brigade continues to prove that it is not merely a cargo-moving organization, but a vital strategic hub for joint military readiness. By forging deep partnerships with commercial ports and enhancing internal Soldier-civilian staff coordination, the "Rapid Support" team ensures the nation’s strategic gateways remain secure, agile, and prepared to project combat power globally at a moment's notice.
